Pink Stripes

'Pink Stripes' (Mike Derrow 2006) has got to be one of the most exciting new directions in daylilies that I've seen.

There are just a few other daylilies with some similar characteristics. These are:
'Fizziwig' (Weston) - not shown on her website...
'Hairbrain' (Weston 2008)
and
'Doctor Strangelove' (Cochenour 2007)

I have 'Fizziwig', and will try to get 'Doctor Strangelove' in order to try to reinforce the striping genes.... but my current focus is 'Pink Stripes' because Mike has been so good at documenting the results of his breeding with 'Pink Stripes' showing the exciting possibilities. See:

2007 Updates

Thanks so much to Mike for being such a great guy and for sharing the information and experiences he's had with his introduction!

Watch this space in 2 years time for what should be some awesome 'Pink Stripes' kids!!

Next Steps...

I have been ever so lucky to make such good friends along my daylily path. One very special friend has such great seedlings, I am so lucky to have some of the next generation of her seedlings growing in my garden and will hopefully see bloom from them next year. I also have these to be started this year:

Chin Whiskers x Seedling (#36)

CHIN WHISKERS (McRae) 1992 DOR DIP Dusty rose UFo with large undefined and brush-stroky chartreuse green throat and thick lighter colored creamy midrib. Gently recurved form with big open 1/8” ruffles. Excellent bud count and northern rebloom with extended bloom. Has produced some wonderful seedlings. Early midseason. 5” bloom, 30” scape.

x

SEEDLING #36 (Cerulean Star x Stargate Portal) First year bloom. This picture is somewhat lighter in color than what the average blooms looked like but you get to see more of the structure. Dark purple open form with lots of quilling, twisting and turning of sepals. Bluish eye and green throat surrounded by cream. Around 3 foot tall scape. Two way branching.

Peppermint Ice x Seedling (#51)

PEPPERMINT ICE (Lovell) 2004 SEV DIP (Top Billing X Joan Senior) Cream and white blend with magenta striping and what appears to be stippling. Yellow throat fading into a green heart. Very fast increaser, good foliage. Very unusual. Early midseason, 5’ bloom, 15 buds, 22” scape, 3-way branching. Will throw stripes and broken colors to kids.

x

SEEDLING #51 (Julias Choice x North Wind Dancer) Very wide bloom, about 7 inches wide on average but had a couple at 9 inches, nice quilling and curling under. Lavender color with darker veining, good green throat surrounded by cream. Average height, average bud counts.

Seedling (#99) x Satin Bird

SEEDLING #99 (Dallas Star seedling x Trahlyta) Medium-tall, clear lavender with a creamy watermarked eye, which you can't really see because of how the light was hitting the bloom. My hand is there to just tip the bloom out of direct sunlight. Olive green throat. 6" bloom. Average budcounts but very good scapes.

x

SATIN BIRD (Childs) 1982 DOR DIP I've seen pictures of Satin Bird with a range of color from a clear raspberry to a more reddish purple as it appears in my garden. Open form triangular shaped bitone with narrow petals. violet with a darker violet triangular eyezone surrounding a lighter watermark. Occasionally produces very late blooming kids. Like Trahlyta, it does not necessarily produce eyed kids. Midseason. 6-7” bloom. 35-28” scape.

Seedling (#72) x Zuni Thunderbird

SEEDLING #72 (Starmans Quest x True To Whim) A small bloom maybe 4 inches across, very delicate crispate. Clear colors of red purple with a hint of a blue eye surrounded by white. Green heart surrounded by a yellow throat.

x

ZUNI THUNDERBIRD (Ned Roberts) 2003 SEV DIP (parentage unknown but pod parent is Talon) UFo crispate. Dark wine red with extended yellow throat and green heart. The sepals twist and turn gracefully on each bloom. Elegant ufo form that has lots of personality. Ned wrote: I wish it had wider distribution. It is one of my curliest intros and the green throat ranks as one of my greenest. ZT is one of the parents of Licorice Twist. ZT has an awesome gene pool and passes on the curly form and green throat. The dark color is dominant. Midseason, 7” bloom, Bud count of 16. 31” scape.

Seedling (#93) x Fluid Dynamics

SEEDLING #93 (Holly Dancer x Helga Bjornerud Burkey) Great budcounts, nice open branching and lots of scapes with this seedling. I've kept this one 3 years as a bridge plant. 6+" blooms. Darkest velvety red-purple with even darker veining and a green throat.

x

FLUID DYNAMICS (Linda Michaels) (Prague Spring' X Trahlyta) 2007 If it's from Linda Michaels, you know it has superb performance, great branching and budcounts. Pinky lavender and a good green throat with my favorite attribute being the tight spooling up of the sepals. It can spool them up a lot tighter than this picture shows. And best of all, it does pass this trait on to the kids in varying degrees. Petals pinch in a charming fashion - this is a really fun plant. 6" blooms, 33" tall scapes. 2 laterals and 24 buds average.

Seedling (#148) x Seedling (#103)

SEEDLING #148 (Wilson Spider seedling x Orchid Corsage) A rose bicolor with a darker rose eye and pale pinky-lavender edges. Darker veining and a chartreuse green throat. 5 inch open form bloom and average height and budcount.

x

SEEDLING #103 (Pink Super Spider x North Wind Dancer) I really like what Pink Super Spider throws when put with narrower plants. A clear lipstick red bloom about 5-6 inches, good green throat surrounded by a near white to cream halo. Petal tips curl under. Average height.

Seedling (#148) x Seedling (#138)

SEEDLING #148 (Wilson Spider seedling x Orchid Corsage) A rose bicolor with a darker rose eye and pale pinky-lavender edges. Darker veining and a chartreuse green throat. 5 inch open form bloom and average height and budcount.

x

SEEDLING 138 (Pink Super Spider x North Wind Dancer) Nice 7" wide seedling with rich deep red saturated color, nice white eye and big green throat. Average height. Candelabra branching and 15 budcount.

Seedling (#59) x Seedling (#51)

SEEDLING #59 2005 (Holly Dancer X Helga Bjornerud Burkey) A reverse bitone open form. Creamy pale pink blooms with darker raspberry stippling on the outside of the sepals. The stippling varies in intensity from bloom to bloom appearing on the petals as well as the sepals. Grass green throat outlined by a small halo of yellow. Slightly ruffled petals. Early midseason. 5-6” blooms, 28” tall.

x

SEEDLING #51 (Julias Choice x North Wind Dancer) Very wide bloom, about 7 inches wide on average but had a couple at 9 inches, nice quilling and curling under. Lavender color with darker veining, good green throat surrounded by cream. Average height, average bud counts.

Seed to start this year

No blooms on seedlings last year - what a horrendous year all around for the garden, so no big surprise. In spite of that, I've narrowed down the areas that I want to work with and have a much more focused selection of seeds to start this year. I'll post photo entries soon.

The main focus areas are:

1) Splashes and Stripes and Patterns on open flowers. Preferably the Spatulate form.
2) Pale watermarks with white edges on UF forms.
3) Tall black stemmed, pale pastel flowers. Spidery or trumpet shaped.

Flutterbye x Military School

FLUTTERBYE (Childs F) 1981 DOR DIP Lavender self with a pale lavender eyezone. Creamy chalky yellow throat fading to lettuce green heart. Petals are deep lavender with a wide, lighter lavender edge - can almost appear near-white - and slight ruffling. Recurved sepals are pale lavender also with a lighter edge. Sometime the sepals actually recurve into themselves and appear paler in color than the petals. A good bloomer with well branched scapes. Excellent plant habits. Early to midseason, 6” blooms, 26” scapes.

x

MILITARY SCHOOL (Santa Lucia) 2006) DIP DOR (Spanish Fandango x Seedling) Burgundy purple with a chevron patterned eyezone. Yellow throat fades into a green heart. Transmits chevron pattern well. A major breakthrough for spidery patterned daylilies. Midseason. 6” bloom, 20 buds. 30 inch scape, 2 branches.

Seedling (#20ellis) x Military School

Sandy Ellis seedling #20 (Indian Giver x Pink Super Spider) Absolutely fabulous performer in my zone 5/6 garden. Lots of buds. Blooms over a long period, saturated color blooms in a dark red overshot with purple with darker rays of color coming out from a big green throat. Velvety substance. Fast to increase. Mid to late season, 5 inch bloom. I think the watermarked eye, which isn't very visible in this picture, will pick up the pattern of Military School, at least thats what I'm hoping.

SEEDLING #3 from 2006. (Linda Michael's Dallas Star seedling x Trahlyta) Held onto this one for the fabulous color and the wire edge of near white. Fantastic red color, not sure how to describe it, maybe carmine red? Watermarked eye with a pencil edge of darker purply-red. Star-shaped yellow eye fading into a good green heart. A little on the short side but the color is fabulous.
